What is a Doula?
Doula is a Greek word meaning 'woman servant'. A Doula works with a new mother before birth and during labour, offering physical, emotional and educational support. Doulas are also sometimes called montrice, labour support, birth assistant
Why do I need a Birth Doula?
Working with a doula can be very beneficial to your overall experience during labour and birth. Many studies show that having a doula helps to give you:
50% reduction in caesarean rates
25% shorter labour
60% reduction in epidural requests
40% reduction in oxytocin (pitocin) use
30% reduction in analgesia use
40% reduction in forceps delivery

Does a Doula replace my partner?
Absolutely not. A doula will work alongside you and your partner as a member of your birthing team. The doula is there for dad as well as mom. When you have a doula at your side, dad can be comfortable in the knowledge that his needs will also be met. Your doula will be by your side during your entire labour and birth. This gives dad the freedom to move in and out of the room, take much needed snack and bathroom breaks, or even just step outside for a breather. He can do this secure in the knowledge that the woman he loves is still well cared for while he is out. Your doula can help dad feel comfortable in the labour room, remind him of comfort measures and suggest new ideas, and help him to be helpful.
Why do I need a Postpartum Doula?
A postpartum doula supports a new mother and family after the birth. The early days and weeks when a new baby comes home can be filled with anxiety or stress when new parents are faced with caring for the tiny person in their home that is dependent on them for everything. A doula can help ease the transition of bringing baby home by helping the parents to learn skills for caring for their baby, helping with breastfeeding, light house keeping, making sure mom is eating and well hydrated, preparing an occasional meal, or even just caring for baby while mom gets some much needed sleep. Studies show that having the assistance of a postpartum doula will often reduce the incidence of postpartum mood disorders.
How much does a Doula cost?
If you have been researching Doula services, you will have discovered that prices vary according to Geographic Region. It is my belief that every woman deserves a positive birth experience, and thus deserves to have a Doula by her side. I have set fees established, and I also offer my services on a sliding scale. Do not assume that you cannot afford to have a Doula - please contact me. I'm happy to discuss your unique situation and come up with a plan for you!
When is payment due?
Postpartum Doula services are payable by the hour. You will choose a package of hours that suits you. Payment will be due upon my arrival the first day, unless you have chosen to pay ahead of time. Labour Doula fees are to be paid in full no later than 4 weeks before your due date. The last thing you need to worry about when the time actually comes to have your baby, is taking a minute to pay your Doula! When we discuss the terms of our contract, we will set up a payment plan. A deposit of $250 is required to secure my services. There is a discount available for those choosing to pay in full up-front. Otherwise, I am happy to set up a payment plan with you, allowing you to make smaller monthly payments up until 4 weeks before your due date.
